11 killed, 8 injured in fire at security forces camp

A huge fire broke out late Wednesday evening in a Central Security Forces camp in al-Marg, killing 11 soldiers and injuring eight others.

Fire engines managed to control the fire and the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Witnesses said they saw 11 dead bodies in the hospital’s morgue, wrapped with blankets. A source at the hospital said seven of the victims died after they arrived at the hospital.

An eyewitness said there were more than 100 soldiers sleeping in their barracks when the fire broke out at the exit door. The soldiers attempted to extinguish the fire with their blankets and mattresses, which caused more smoke.

Two of the injured men said that they fell asleep while they were working in a bakery next to the barracks, and that they did not notice the fire had started.

The camp leadership declined to give details to the media and banned taking pictures of the injured soldiers.

Prosecutors have started an immediate investigation into the incident.
