Cairo Criminal Court, headed by Judge Mohamed Sherin Fahmy, sentenced 20 defendants on Monday to death in their retrial, along with 136 other defendants, over storming Kerdasa Police Station in August 2013.
The court has set July 2 to issue the final verdict after requesting Egypt's Grand mufti's opinion in the death sentences.
The defendants were accused of killing 12 policemen from the police station and two passersby; attempting to murder 10 other policemen; destroying the police station; burning police vehicles; and illegally possessing heavy firearms.
Last February, the Court of Cassation accepted the appeal of 150 defendants against their death sentence in the case.
