The official website of the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) has announced that 20 Egyptian universities have been listed among the top 2000 universities in its 2024 edition.
The Egyptian government issued a statement stating that Cairo University topped the list locally according to the ranking results, placing it among the top 513 universities worldwide. It was followed by Ain Shams University in second place among the top 769 universities globally, and then Mansoura University in third place among the top 873 universities worldwide.
Alexandria University came in 19th place globally, followed by the universities of (Asyut, Zagazig, Tanta, Al-Azhar, Suez Canal, Beni Suef, Helwan, Fayoum, Menoufia, Kafr El-Sheikh, Benha, the British University in Egypt, Minia University,the American University in Cairo, and Suez University).
Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, praised the efforts of Egyptian universities in adopting educational and research policies that are in line with international ranking standards, which puts Egyptian universities in a prestigious position to compete with major international universities. He stressed the ministry’s support for Egyptian universities in the file of international ranking.
Dr. Abeer Al-Shater, Assistant Minister for Technical Affairs and Supervisor of the Knowledge Bank, indicated that the CWUR ranking selects only 2000 universities out of 20,000 worldwide, and uses seven objective and strong indicators grouped into four fields to classify the world’s universities, namely: (Education) and depends on the academic success of university graduates (25%), (Employability) and this indicator depends on the professional success of university graduates (25%), (Faculty) and is measured by the number of faculty members who have obtained the highest academic distinctions (10%), the fourth and last indicator is (Scientific research), which includes (Research outputs: and is measured by the total number of research papers (10%), High-quality publications: are measured by the number of research papers that appear in high-level journals (10%), Impact: is measured by the number of research papers that appear in highly influential journals (10%), Citations: are measured by the number of research papers that have been heavily cited (10%).
Dr. Adel Abdel Ghaffar, media consultant and official spokesman for the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, explained that Egyptian universities have achieved a breakthrough in various international classifications,explaining that the strategy adopted by the Ministry of Higher Education in this regard has had a great impact on achieving this remarkable progress, as the ministry has paid great attention to international publication in major scientific journals, as well as providing technical support to educational institutions and research centers as well as financial support for researchers.
The Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) was launched in 2012; as a research project that provides advice in the field of policies, strategic visions and consulting services to governments and universities to improve educational and research outcomes.
