24 arrested for protesting death sentences in Port Said stadium massacre

Port Said Attorney Gen. Faisal al-Tahawy ordered on Wednesday that 24 people be placed into custody for 15 days, pending investigations into assaulting police personnel. A minor was ordered to be kept at a juvenile house.

The attacks occurred during confrontations between police and protesters who were demonstrating against the death sentences handed to 11 suspects involved in the Port Said stadium massacre. The incidents took place on Monday and continued into the following day.

Security sources said the suspects included Mohamed Khalaf Mahmoud, whose brother was sentenced to death.

The prosecution ordered the National Security Agency to conduct investigations into the incidents.

The prosecution accused the suspects of protesting, rioting, assaulting police and smashing two police vehicles. A committee was formed of engineering experts from the traffic department to inspect the damage to vehicles and inquire about which streets were closed during the investigations.

Prosecutors earlier heard testimonies of police officers who arrested the suspects during the confrontations. A team then went to the prison to hear the testimonies of the prisoners.
