Violence erupted on Saturday afternoon at protests commemorating the birth of the April 6 Youth Movement in downtown Cairo, as clashes rose between demonstrators and police forces, eyewitnesses reported.
Police fired birdshot and tear gas to disperse protesters and street vendors in the area surrounding the High Court, the Journalists' Syndicate and the Lawyers' Syndicate. Several protesters were injured and eyewitnesses said ambulances were hardly reaching the site of the clashes.
Protesters had closed off Ramses Street, near where the demonstration kicked off. Police chased protesters down the surrounding streets.
The April 6 Youth Movement had organized a "Day of Anger" against the ruling Muslim Brotherhood to commemorate five years since it was born as a protest movement against former President Hosni Mubarak rule. Marches took off from different spots in Cairo and the Delta.
