Two containers of mud from India were seized by the Civil Protection Department at Damietta seaport last Saturday.
The mud, which shipment documents show to be material for use in construction, was found to have 30 times the internationally accepted level of radiation.
The containers arrived last December and were sitting in the arrival section of the port for three months before a worker at the Container Transaction Company (CTC) discovered the contamination in a random check.
CTC renders free services to detect radiation levels in containers. Using small manual detection devices, company workers inspect random samples of the one million containers that arrive at the port each year, and report any violations to the authorities.
