Egypt to open consulate in Kurdistan next month

Egypt plans to officially open a diplomatic consulate in the region of Kurdistan in early November once certain "logistic problems" are resolved, a diplomatic source told Al-Masry Al-Youm on Sunday.

The move will represent the first time for an Arab country to establish a consulate in the autonomous region in the north of Iraq.

“Chancellor Suleiman Othman will likely assume the position of Egyptian consul to the region,” the source said.

He went on to point out that an Egyptian diplomatic delegation headed by Assistant Foreign Minister for Arab Affairs Mohamed Qassem had visited Kurdistan last month. During its visit, the delegation rented a building to temporarily house consulate officials until permanent premises can be built.

The source added that preparations for the opening of an Egyptian consulate in the southern Iraqi city of Basra were also currently underway.
