Muslim Brotherhood MP Haitham Abu Khalil, leader of the Brotherhood's opposition front and election boycott advocate, has urged members of the group's guidance bureau to abolish the slogan "Islam is the Solution" from the campaign trail.
Abu Khalil said the move will prevent the government from exploiting the issue, enabling political discourse to focus on issues of utmost importance to Egyptians.
But the Brotherhood's Secretary General Mahmoud Hussein quickly dismissed the suggestion.
“We are sticking with the slogan ‘Islam is the solution’ and we will not be changing it,” he said.
Abu Khalil also said the Brotherhood will host its seventh general assembly in December.
“We will discuss our internal affairs as well as the new agenda, the Turkish experience, and the scope of religious and political work within the group,” said Abu Khalil.
The first six assemblies were held between the time of Hassan al-Banna's creation of the group and the leader's death in 1949.
Members will also discuss, “the proposal made by Dr. Abdel Moneim Aboul Futouh to withdraw from politics for a few years," Abu Khalil added. "And we will evaluate the MB’s participation in the parliamentary elections and the groups’ gains and losses associated with such a participation.”
Aboul Futouh has been a leading figure in the Muslim Brotherhood for decades.
