The Independence Party, part of the National Alliance Supporting Legitimacy (NASL), called for protesting before polling stations on the day of the constitutional referendum.
The party said in a statement issued Saturday that it considers whoever takes part in the referendum a ‘sinner,’ and those who vote in favor of the document commit a ‘bigger sin.’
“The referendum day will be a day for protesting against the amended draft constitution and the coup across Egypt around all polling stations,” the statement said. “We do not recognize any political or legal impacts of the coup, no matter how small, so how could we accept voting ‘no’ on a rigid constitution whose results will be flawed?”
On Tuesday, Interim President Adly Mansour received the final draft of the constitution from constitutional committee head Amr Moussa. Mansour is expected to announce the date of referendum within 30 days of receiving the draft.
