Many terrorist groups believe in the importance of media to spread their thoughts and recruit more minds. As a result, several of them have focused on publishing magazines to help spread their influence. The following nine publications are issued by three separate publishing houses:
Dabeq
This magazine is issued by the Islamic State (IS) and published by the Al-Hayah media center, the media wing of IS. Issued in English, the magazine is expertly designed. Sporting 42-50 pages, Dabeq mainly focuses on the caliphate that has allegedly been established in Iraq and Syria.
Dar al-Islam
This IS magazine is issued in French and the first edition was published on 23 December and promoted on the IS Twitter account. The second edition displayed a lengthy interview with Algerian Hayat Boumeddiene, the wife of gunman Amedy Coulibaly, who killed a policewoman and four hostages in France.
Athan
This English-speaking magazine is produced by activists who write under the name Taliban Khurasan. The first edition was issued on 5 May 2013. It covers news in areas where IS is active and dessiminates its magazine from Syria to Mali. The main focus of the magazine is Pakistan.
Resurgence
This English-language magazine is issued by the Al-Sahab institution. Issued in 2014, the first edition focused on the launch of strategic attacks on areas related to oil shipments going from the Middle East to to the West.
Inspire
This publication is issued by Al-Qaeda. It was first distributed on 10 July 2012. The magazine is supervised by Anwar al-Awlaqy. An article written by Samir Khan entitled “How to make a bomb in your mother’s kitchen?” was one of the magazine's most famous.
Muasskar al-Battar
This is an online publication that spreads Al-Qaeda rhetoric. It focuses on trainings made by the group.
Sout al-Jihad
Although it appeared before Muasskar al-Battar, this magazine is considered more important as it is linked to the group’s supreme authority. Sout al-Jihad was first published in 2003 in Saudi Arabia. It was considered to be the first electronic publication for Al-Qaeda. It publishes interviews with the group members as well as details of terrorist operations that have been carried out.
Al-Khansaa
This monthly electronic magazine is published by a female media center in Saudi Arabia. The first edition was published in September 2004. It was specialized by Al-Qaeda for women. It mainly advises women on matters of jihad, fighting and daily life.
Al-Shamekha
This magazine is for women and discusses skin care, style and etiquette.
