The United States will either have to accept the non-existent democratic progress in Egypt or cite national security requirements if it chooses to proceed with its plans to resume military aid to Cairo, a US newspaper’s website said, adding that this situation represents a major "test of principles" for the US administration.
“US law requires Washington to cut off aid to countries which have military coups. Instead, the Obama administration suspended US$700 million of Egypt’s annual $1.3 billion in military support, promoting the fiction that Mr. Sisi’s power grab wasn’t really a coup”, said the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
According to the website, in order to proceed with its annual $1.3 billion aid to Cairo, Washington will have to testify to democratic progress in Egypt or to bypass the law and disburse the amount with the pretext of national security needs.
“Both options are odious. The best course for Washington would be to withhold all aid to Egypt until the Cairo government cleans up its act,” the article cocnluded.
