The cause of an explosion on a poultry farm in Beni Suef Friday evening is uncertain, due to conflicting reports.
Official sources at the Department of Health in Beni Suef said the accident was caused by a gas cylinder explosion. Security sources, however, confirmed that the blast was caused by grenades, pointing out that the poultry farm belonged to a terrorist group operating in the Eastern Desert.
Four people were killed and one injured in the blasts. According to initial investigations, the victims belonged to the Muslim Brotherhood.
The blast occurred in a part of the farm where bombs were being manufactured illegally near the Snour checkpoint in Beni Suef. The explosion killed, among others, Hossam Badr Marzouk, 26, a civil engineer and son of an FJP leader, according to head of Beni Suef Security Directorate Mohamed Abu Taleb.
Sixty-six iron pipes, as well as gunpowder, jerry cans of potassium and a burnt machine gun were found at the site of the explosion.
The bodies of the victims were transferred to Beni Suef General Hospital. A claim was filed for the incident and the prosecution has taken over the investigation.
