The climate change official at the United Nations, Youssef Nassef, has said that the world will need nearly US$100 billion annually by 2020 to confront climate change and rising temperatures.
The Green Climate Fund of the United Nationsm which is based in Korea, will be responsible for the collection of international grants from various international bodies, such as the African Bank. The funds will go to developing countries, if requested, to implementation projects related to climate change, Nasef told MENA.
The fund has only raised $10 billion to date, Nasef added.
Chairman of the Central Administration of Climate Change Hesham Eissa stressed the need to address the different impacts of climate change on floods and the Nile Delta, as well as the urban development area in the northern Delta and the coastal region to the north of the Gulf of Suez. It is also important to focus on the impact drought has on food production in the African continent, as well as transport, crop structure, economics, politics and other social influences.
Eissa stressed that the most important obstacle is that developed countries have not carried out their promises of providing financial assistance to address the issue.
Egypt is discussing the issue with other African countries to have a unified stance in the upcoming conference on climate change in Paris, said Eissa.
