The Cairo and Giza Tobacco Traders Association has called for the halting of cigarette sales on world No Tobacco Day, which is celebrated on May 31.
Several tobacco producing companies declared they would stop the distribution and marketing of their products in solidarity with the association’s call to preserve Egyptians' health.
Osama Salama, chief of the association, said smoking is the cause of several diseases. People are endangered in accordance to the amounts they smoke. The people who are most at risk are those who have smoked for several years and have increased their intake over time.
Salama also called for carrying out laws that prevent smoking in public places, institutions, corporations and stores in order to reduce the number of passive smokers by 25 percent.
