A group of protesters in Germany is demanding the release of the al-Jazeera journalist Ahmed Mansour, who was arrested upon Egypt’s request at Berlin's Tegel airport on Saturday, the Guardian reported.
Egypt had issued an international arrest warrant for the British-Egyptian journalist, sentenced by an Egyptian court to 15 years' imprisonment over charges of torturing a lawyer during the 2011 uprising against Hosni Mubarak in Cairo.
“There were a number of protests against Mansour’s potential extradition on Sunday and Monday morning”, the Guardian reported.
“A group calling itself the German-Egyptian Union for Democracy gathered around 100 protesters outside the Berlin jail where he is being detained. They held signs which read: ‘Freedom for Ahmed Mansour. Freedom for Egypt. Freedom for Journalists’.”
Since the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi, President Sisi's supporters have accused the Qatari-owned Al-Jazeera channel of supporting the Muslim Brotherhood. The channel is currently pursuing a legal battle with the Egyptian authorities, in order to obtain a compensation for the alleged damage to its business inflicted by Egypt.
Egypt had shut down the channel’s Cairo bureau and prosecuted journalists working for the channel over charges of inciting violence, unlicensed operation and disseminating false news.
