Singer Hany Shaker was elected chairman of the Musicians' Syndicate late Tuesday evening after fierce competition against current outgoing head, Mostafa Kamel.
Ten board members were also elected.
Speaking to Al-Masry Al-Youm after his victory, Shaker said he would improve the syndicate with “a timetable and a definite plan”.
He also said he would give priority to musicians' pensions and medical care.
Overall, there was a low turnout at the polls, but a number of pop singers, such as Saad al-Soghayyar and Shaaban Abdel Rahim, voiced support for Mostafa Kamel.
Inas Abdel Dayem, head of the Cairo Opera House, was also present at the polls.
