Minister discusses USAID projects to improve education in Egypt

Education and Technical Education Minister El-Helali el Sherbini has met with Sherry Carlin, the director of USAID, to discuss projects that will improve education in Egypt, build labs in schools and increase the number of schools participating in the “STEM” project.

Sherbini said the ministry is also keen on improving vocational education by building a bridge between vocational schools and the labor market. “We have already developed 10 percent of our vocational schools,” he said. “But we still have more than 1,000 to work on.”

For her part, Carlin said her agency has a project for cooperation with the ministry in the field of vocational education that will be launched in 2016.

Hala al-Serafi, the director of the “STEM” project, said the project aims to build outstanding schools and trainers. “We have trained 1,500 certified instructors, 1,500 assistant teachers and 90,000 teachers on new teaching materials,” she said. “And we are preparing a five-year strategy with the ministry.”
