Egypt’s Grand Mufti has rejected what he described as “generalized” perceptions that link terrorism to Islam.
“Islam is totally innocent of terrorism and terrorists’ actions,” Shawqy Allam said during a seminar at the Cairo International Book Fair on Tuesday, stressing that terrorism and extremism should be studied by “scientific bodies” in order to define their root causes.
He said Al-Azhar, Egypt’s and the Islamic World’s top religious academy, promotes moderation and has engaged in several activities addressing the West on Islam’s opposition to bloodshed.
