Foreign Ministry responds to ElBaradei complaint, says passport on way to Vienna

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed abu Zeid has replied to a complaint from former vice president Mohamed ElBaradei over the delay in issuing his new passport.

“The passport was issued a few days ago and is on its way to the Egyptian embassy in Vienna in a diplomatic pouch for the handover,” abu Zeid said.

ElBaradei responded: “No one informed me about this. Thank you.”

ElBaradei had previously complained that the Foreign Ministry did not renew his passport, although he filed a request three weeks ago.

“Three weeks ago, I filed a request with the Foreign Ministry to renew my passport, which should normally take a few days. I hope there will be no confusion between citizenship rights and state policies,” ElBaradei said on Twitter.

ElBaradei resigned from the post of vice president in Adly Mansour's government in 2013, to express his refusal of the forcible dispersal of the Rabaa al-Adaweya and Nahda sit-ins in which hundreds died. The Nobel Laureate has been living abroad ever since.
