Housewife imprisoned for 19 anti-regime Facebook pages

Alexandria Criminal Court sentenced a woman to three years of rigorous imprisonment over charges of inciting against the army and the police, for running 19 anti-regime Facebook pages and a number of groups.

The defendant Shaimaa A., 20, had been administrator for the pages using two accounts: one bearing her name and the other called ‘Aneen al-Samt’ (The Moan of Silence). She was charged with “incitement” against security forces and the current government.

Investigations conducted by the National Security Agency found that she had supported the Muslim Brotherhood in the Facebook pages established.

According to investigations, the pages and groups were administered through a common landline number – through which they traced her address.

Upon a permission from the public prosecutor, investigators inspected the house and asked her husband – who was at the house at the time – if his wife belonged to the Muslim Brotherhood.

The husband admitted his wife was a sympathizer with the Muslim Brotherhood, but affirmed she does not belong to the group.

Investigators inspected the defendant’s computer and found the Facebook accounts she used to administer the anti-regime pages and groups.

According to investigations, the computer contained confirming the defendant’s leanings towards the Muslim Brotherhood.

The woman was arrested and referred to a criminal trial later, before being sentenced.
