Permanent Representative of Egypt to the United Nations Mohamed Edrees participated in a session held by the UN Security Council on Tuesday to discuss mechanisms for reinforcing peacekeeping operations in the African continent.
According to al-Ahram online’s Arabic edition, Edrees demonstrated the unprecedented challenges facing the operations in Africa, asserting that Egypt would reinforce peace settlement in Africa.
Egypt prefers political solutions to settle disputes, taking into consideration the specialty of every dispute in the African countries, he said.
Edrees emphasized on the importance of preserving the national state and the peacekeeping forces in Africa.
Egypt will establish the African Union Center for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (AUC-PCRD), as well as a unit for mediation support and conflict prevention within the AU Commission structure.
Egypt has contributed to 37 UN missions with over 30,000 peacekeepers, deployed in 24 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe since 1960. It joined the “Declaration of Shared Commitments on UN Peacekeeping Operations” and the “Kigali Principles on the Protection of Civilians” to support the UN peace-keeping operations worldwide.
