Photos of five buildings whose facades lie immediately adjacent to the Terrat al-Zomar corridor construction project in Giza drew criticism and derision from social media users on Monday.
Sources at Ministry of Housing, however, said that the buildings were built after the construction of the corridor was announced, and are thus in violation of building codes.
Accordingly, the ministry has issued an order to demolish the buildings.
Sources added that buildings lying on 20,000 square meters in the Terrat al-Zomar area will be expropriated by the government.
The ministry has allocated LE250 million to compensate affected residents, but will not give any compensation to the building owners, sources asserted.
The corridor — which is part of plan to build 12 connecting roads in the Cairo and Giza Governorates — will be 12 km long, and will connect the southern segment of Giza’s ring road to the northern section, thereby reducing travel times and easing heavy traffic.
