Egyptian media figure Ibrahim Essa called for banning the call to prayer in mosques through horn speakers in order to not disturb tourists.
Essa talked about of tourism problems in Egypt through his talk show “Hadith al-Qahira” (Cairo Talk) on the “al-Qahira wal Nas” (Cairo and the People) channel on Friday.
He explained: “There is a suite in Marriott Mena House Hotel, opposite to it is a small mosque, and the mosque’s speakers are heard in the heart of the suite, meaning the call to prayer and lessons are in the heart of the hotel.”
Essa continued: “If you criticize the situation, some say, ‘Shut up, you are failing the religion. You want to ban the call to prayer because of tourism!”
He added: “No, I want to ban the horn speakers because it is not from Islam. It expresses the Salafi thought.. In the case of talking about that, the response will be that you want to prevent people from praying.. and closing the doors of Islam in favor of perverted tourism.”
