Egyptian tennis star, Mayar Sherif made the biggest jump in her career by rising 16 places at once in the world rankings of tennis players issued on Monday.
Sherif rose to 43rd place in the rankings with 1,140 points, the top position ever reached by any Egyptian tennis champion.
This came after her impressive performance in the Madrid Masters Championship, which concluded on Sunday, during which the Egyptian player reached the quarter-finals.
Sherif was eliminated from the tournament in the quarter-finals while facing off Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, who won the title on Saturday.
The Tunisian champion, Anas Jaber, fell three places to become seventh with a score of 4,116 points, due to the injury that made her withdraw from the German Stuttgart championship from the semi-final round and not participate in the Madrid championship.
Poland’s Iga Natalia Świątek maintained the top of the rankings with 9,625 points, after winning the Stuttgart Championship and reaching the finals of the Madrid Championship, followed by Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, with 7,881 points, who was crowned with the Madrid title, then American Jessica Pegula, with 5,300 points.
Sherif previously made history after becoming the first Egyptian to qualify for two Grand Slam tournaments.
She is also the first Egyptian to participate in the main competitions of the last Roland Garros tournament.
The tennis star has won eight singles titles and six doubles titles in the various international tournaments throughout the years.
She recently participated in the tennis competitions at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, becoming the first Egyptian player in history to do so, but she was eliminated in the first round.
