The Egyptian Animal Friends Society, an organization that aims to prevent cruelty against animals, is working to compile a black list of Egyptian governorates that commit regular animal rights violations.
The society plans to have the list approved by the Egyptian government.
Ahmed al-Sherbini, head of the organization, said organizations concerned with animal rights intend to submit an urgent memorandum to the ministries of agriculture, the interior and justice to encourage officials to investigate violations committed by pet shops.
Al-Sherbini said his organization has already prepared a report documenting animal rights violations at farms and during transportation to sales outlets.
The report also discusses maltreatment of stray cats and dogs.
Egypt has a controversial history with poor animal protection regulations, evidenced by the ongoing smuggling and illegal hunting of many endangered species. Moreover, animals kept in captivity reportedly suffer from a range of ill treatment.
In defiance of a trend of official disregard to these issues, animal welfare activists periodically launch campaigns, such as a '"Revitalize the Zoo" project launched in 2007 at Giza Zoo to press the animal rights agenda.
