Hundreds of labors at the Safaga Red Sea port, south of Hurghada, began an open-ended sit-in on Thursday over salary delays and the imposition of additional fees.
Around 950 workers of the Cruiser Passengers’ Baggage Porters Association staged the sit-in, refusing to enter the port to work.
The workers said the association instituted an LE300 monthly fee to secure necessary entry permits as well as LE1500 for insurance and LE100 per month for luggage trolley rentals. They called for the cancellation of these fees as well as the prompt delivery of their salaries.
Ahmed Abdel Aleem, head of the Port Baggage Loading Workers’ Syndicate, affirmed the association refused to dole out salaries. Aleem also said the entry permits were previously distributed for free.
The sit-in disrupted the locating and transporting of arriving luggage.
