Cairo building collapse leaves 8 dead, 4 injured

A six-story building on Tuesday collapsed in the Waily district of Cairo, located at 79 Abbasiya Street.

The death toll is now up to eight, after civil defense forces recovered the body of an elderly man from under the rubble.

The Cairo Governorate’s central operations room received a report of the building’s collapse. The building, constructed back in the 1960s, consisted of a ground floor, four floors, and a rooftop.

Immediately, civil defense forces, ambulances, security leadership, and all executive authorities of the governorate were dispatched to the scene to oversee the removal of rubble.

The Public Prosecution has initiated an investigation.

Civil defense forces managed to extract four injured individuals from under the rubble, who were transported to the Dar al-Shifa Hospital for necessary treatment.

There were also two fatalities reported.

Civil defense, central rescue teams, and governorate authorities are continuing to search for survivors under the rubble.

The Cairo Governor has directed that intensive medical care be provided to the injured and urgent aid be provided to the affected.

The Cairo Governor also decided to form an engineering committee to examine the collapsed building and its neighboring buildings, with the precautionary evacuation of residents nearby without their belongings to determine the extent of their damage from the collapse.

Civil defense forces continue to search for survivors under the rubble.
