Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Sunday issued his first comment on the fall of former Syrian President Bassar al-Assad’s regime.
In his first comment on the developments taking place after the fall of Bashar al-Assad, the Egyptian president explained: “Syria in the past is not the Syria of today. Syria as we mean in the days of Muhammad Ali is not the Syria of today. Its geopolitical location is strong.”
“But at the same time, there are determinants that control it, until God wills that the country be saved by its natives, not by miracles. Those who make the decision are natives. Either they destroy it or they build it.”
Egypt’s ties with the Trump administration
Regarding Egyptian relations with the new US administration of President-elect Donald Trump, Sisi said: “There is communication with the new administration, there is a degree of mutual trust between us, and our opinion is appreciated and accepted by them. We will continue in this manner to find solutions to pending issues such as the issues of Gaza, Sudan and Syria.”
“The strategic relationship has been subjected to many tests and has proven that it is steadfast, strong and capable, and experiences have confirmed this and the need for the US to continue and stabilize its strategic relations with Egypt,” he said.
On Egypt itself
Regarding the situation back home, Sisi explained that, “The country has gone through the most difficult time in the past period with regard to implementing the economic reform plan and achieving development, and it is on the right path, as reflected in the confidence of international financial institutions in the Egyptian economy.”
The Egyptian President’s statements came on the sidelines of a meeting at the strategic command headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, attended by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, and army and police leaders.
