House debates draft criminal procedures law

The House of Representatives, in its plenary session  under Chairman Hanafy al-Gebaly, started on Sunday 29/12/2024 debating the articles of the draft of the new Criminal Procedure Law prepared by a subcommittee emanating from the Constitutional and Legislative Affairs Committee.

The House aims to discuss articles, including articles 1 to 31 in Sunday’s session, articles 32 to 61 in Monday’s session and will resume debating the rest of the articles in upcoming sessions.

The parliament agreed in principle – during its previous session – the draft law after 12 sessions in which discussion of the aforementioned draft law was floated for a debate in principle, with a view to ensuring participation of the largest possible number of representatives in discussing the draft law.

The most important features of the draft explicitly stipulate that homes are inviolable and must not be entered, searched, monitored or eavesdropped on, except by a reasoned judicial order specifying the place, time and purpose thereof, with the addition of restrictions on the powers of judicial control officers in cases of arrest and search of citizens, as well as entering and searching homes.
