CAIRO, Jan 19 (MENA) – Leaders of a number of Egyptian political parties have welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached recently between the Palestinian movement of Hamas and Israel and the delivery of aid to the Gaza Strip.
In statements to MENA Sunday, they said the agreement reflects keenness of the Egyptian leadership on defending the rights of the Palestinians, confronting any attempt to liquidate the Palestinian cause and achieving peace and stability in the region.
Dr Ayman Mohasseb, the head of the Arab Affairs Committee at the House of Representative and member of Al Wafd Party’s higher board, said the ceasefire, which took effect Sunday, is not a truce but rather a permanent ceasefire aiming at achieving stability in the Palestinian territory.
He added that Egypt will continue with its humanitarian role through sending hundreds of trucks laden with humanitarian aid to Gaza to mitigate the suffering of its population.
Ashraf Abul Nasr, a leading member of the Homeland Defenders Party and member of the Egyptian Senate, said the ceasefire is a turning point in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Humanitarian aid trucks began to enter the Gaza Strip from the Egyptian side, carrying on board humanitarian aid that will be provided to residents of the Gaza Strip with the start of the implementation of the agreement.
Last Wednesday, it was announced that a ceasefire agreement was reached in the Gaza Strip envisaging the exchange of prisoners and detainees between Israel and Hamas and restoring calm, to be implemented in three stages, mediated by Egypt, Qatar and the US as the agreement entered into force as of Sunday.
