An Egyptian public transport company is studying the possibility of founding the first radio station to guide drivers around Egypt. The initiative is an effort to reduce the number of road accidents, which are the second most common cause of death in the country.
The President of the Holding Company for Maritime and Land Transport Mohamed Youssef said the radio station would provide information on the movement of traffic in cooperation with other relevant bodies.
Technical studies for the station are currently being conducted, Youssef told Al-Masry Al-Youm, adding that his company will bear all the pertinent costs. The initiative is part of a wider effort to reduce road accidents, he said, particularly because accidents involving public transport can be catastrophic given the large numbers of people public transport vehicles carry.
According to government statistics, 18 people were killed daily in road accidents in 2009.
