UK deputy PM says recognition of Palestinian state part of broader process

The UK’s deputy prime minister said today that recognizing a Palestinian state would not bring one into existence “overnight”, stressing that recognition must be part of a broader peace process.

“Any step to recognize it is because we wish to keep alive the prospects of a two-state solution,” David Lammy told Sky News, while acknowledging that was a distant prospect.

He confirmed that Prime Minister Keir Starmer would be making a decision on recognizing a Palestinian state later on Sunday, as we’ve reported.

Lammy also said the prospects for a ceasefire in Gaza were in tatters.

It was “very hard to see a ceasefire in the coming weeks,” he said.
