Sharm El-Sheikh Summit tops social media with 2.8 billion views across 18,000 posts

The Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit, co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and his US counterpart Donald Trump, and attended by leaders from more than 20 countries, has made significant engagements across media platforms since President Sisi first announced it at the recent Police Academy graduation ceremony on October 8

The summit prompted Twitter users to circulate the hashtag “#Sharm_El_Sheikh_Agreement,” in Arabic language, and Google searches for the summit ignited more than 10,000 searches within hours.

The total number of searches for the “Sharm El-Sheikh” in Arabic and English reached 313,900, including 237,900 in English, which is three times the number of Arabic searches, which totaled 76,000, according to Semrush.

Turkey accounted for the lion’s share of searches, accounting for 60.5 percent.

 

Social media analysis

Al-Masry Al-Youm analyzed the use of the term “Sharm El-Sheikh” on social media platforms, relying on the BrandMentions website.

The total number of tweets over the past five days reached 18,400 shares and posts. The analysis was conducted on a random sample of 7,350 accounts, generating 2,815,198,486 views and 36 million interactions.

The hashtag was most frequently used in English by “indiatimes.com”, with 190,500,000 views—an increase of 24,140 views over “ameblo.jp”—then “kompas.com”, with 155,230,000 views.

The Chinese news agency topped the list of media sites that used the hashtag in Arabic, accounting for 16 percent of the total, while “Manorama News TV” topped the list of sites that used the hashtag in English, accounting for 10 percent of the total.

Although the word’s use in English tweets represents one-fifth of its use in Arabic, with 15,400 hashtags, it has been viewed 2.6 billion times, which is equivalent to 4,510 times in Arabic, with 576,500 views.

It has also generated 29,000,100 interactions, equivalent to four times its use in Arabic, which was at 6.9 million interactions.

 

Trending hashtags

Accounts began trending and circulating the hashtag as soon as the summit was announced, with 281 hashtags generating a total of 480,537,427 views.

Although nearly 90 percent of the hashtag’s reach on the first day was in English, with over 431,145,000 views, it declined as the summit approached, compared to its use in Arabic, which increased by 336 percent over the past five days, achieving 215,198,486 views.

Egypt topped the list of countries with the most usage of the hashtag, whether in English or Arabic.

However, when it was used in Arabic, it was followed by Indonesia, the US, India, Israel, Jordan, Pakistan, and Italy, respectively.

Social media users circulated the hashtag in more than 13 languages, but English accounted for the lion’s share at 44 percent, followed by Arabic at 36 percent, and Italian at six percent.

The hashtags “#Gaza” and “#Egypt” topped the list of hashtags accompanying the main hashtag in Arabic and English, followed by “#Palestine,” “#Trump,” and “#Israel.”

The most frequently used words accompanying the hashtag were “Peace Summit,” followed by “Sharm el-Sheikh,” “Donald Trump,” and “Gaza.”

Yahoo.com was the site that most successfully delivered the hashtag to its audience, with 3.332 billion views, followed by “globo.com” with 755.1 million, and then “cnn.com” with over half a million.
