Global economic thinker Jeffrey Sachs, said that if the draft resolution presented by the US regarding President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza is passed, the will of the Palestinian people will be stripped away for at least a coming generation.
He added: “They want a new Nakba (Catastrophe) for Palestine and control over all of Palestine, and this is the policy followed and adopted by the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.”
Sachs’s remarks came during the Al-Masry Al-Youm Intellectual Encounters event on Wednesday, titled “The Future of Palestine in Light of the Sharm El Sheikh Agreement,” which was moderated by the Chairman of Al-Masry Al-Youm, Mohamed Salmawy, and attended by an elite group of politicians, diplomats, thinkers, researchers, journalists, and media figures.
Sachs explained that the Israeli Prime Minister announced in September, during his speech at the United Nations, that “there will be no Palestinian state,” and that this is his country’s policy.
He clarified: “Of course, this does not mean there won’t be a Palestinian state, but it means there won’t be a state supported by Israel, and the United States’ support for Israeli massacres means there will be no effective Palestinian state,” noting that Washington holds the veto, not Tel Aviv.
Sachs predicted there would be global opposition and conflict centered on the question of: “How, in 2025, nearly 100 years after the British Mandate, are we giving the United States a new mandate over Gaza?”
However, he noted that some governments are afraid of upsetting Trump.
Following the New York announcement for a two-state solution, Sachs said that 140 countries voted in favor of the resolution while the US was against it, explaining that the time is right for a two-state solution.
“Why do we not have a call to approve a Palestinian state to end this war?” he asked.
Sachs revealed that Israel’s actions are illegal, and the killing of Palestinians is carried out under the support of the United States.
He added that what is being witnessed today is a continuation of the imperialism that began with Britain and subsequently the US, which delivers injustice and the absence of justice to the Palestinian people.
The economic thinker continued: “One may be shocked by the double standards practiced by Britain, as it promised Palestine to the Arabs, then to France, and then to the Jews. Britain promised land it did not own to multiple parties, and now, after more than 100 years, this dilemma must be solved.”
Professor Sachs, a global economic thinker and American public policy analyst, and one of the most prominent Jewish voices advocating for just causes, previously stated in an exclusive interview with Al-Masry Al-Youm that US policy has been afflicted by the “arrogance of power” in recent years.
He noted that Americans tried to convince themselves of the ability to rule the world, believing that no one could stop them and that they could reshape the world as they wished, which is why the US launched “wars of choice” in the Middle East.
