Egypt declares Red Sea’s Great Fringing Reef as a marine nature reserve

Egypt’s Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment, Manal Awad, announced on Thursday the issuance of Prime Ministerial Decree #4419 of 2025, declaring the entire Great Fringing Reef area in the Red Sea as a marine nature reserve.

This declaration represents a significant step forward in the state’s efforts to protect biodiversity and promote sustainable development in the Red Sea.

Awad confirmed that the decree includes defining the marine areas added to the boundaries of the nature reserves, based on official maps and coordinates.

She noted that this finalizes the legal framework for the reserves previously declared by Prime Ministerial Decrees #450 of 1986, #143 of 2003, and #1618 of 2006.
