The head of the Cairo Public Transport Authority, Essam al-Sheikh, said that the authority has begun implementing an electronic fare collection system for buses, as part of the state’s plan for digital transformation and financial inclusion, to improve operational efficiency and ensure fair fares.
During phone-in with Extra News TV channel on Saturday, Sheikh added that the new system relies on prepaid cards that can be purchased from sales outlets or via a mobile application.
He continued that the new system allows for accurate calculation of the fare based on the number of stops traveled, with any remaining difference being refunded if the passenger disembarks before reaching the final destination.
A step forward
Sheikh emphasized that the system represents a significant step towards developing public transportation services, achieving higher operational efficiency, and reducing cash transactions, thus facilitating easier revenue monitoring.
The system is being implemented on 1,800 buses in three phases; the first began with 300 buses, the second phase comprising 1,000 buses will begin in February, and the third phase will include 500 buses.
The head of the Cairo Public Transport Authority confirmed that fares are standardized according to the rates set by Cairo Governorate, without any increase.
He explained that the authority has prepared a plan to familiarize citizens, especially the elderly, with the system through explanatory videos on social media platforms and at card sales outlets.
Supervisors will be present to ensure compliance and fare payment, and immediate fines will be imposed on any violators.
