Iranian state media has reported on Sunday the death of former President and current member of the Expediency Discernment Council, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
The former leader was reportedly killed during a missile strike that targeted the capital, Tehran, late Saturday.
In a brief dispatch, official Iranian agencies confirmed that Ahmadinejad was killed alongside several of his companions.
While a detailed official report has yet to be released, media outlets close to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed on Saturday that three of Ahmadinejad’s security detail also perished in the attack, which Tehran attributes to a joint US-Israeli operation.
Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Effie Defrin also announced Sunday that the “opening strike” of the current operation successfully killed 40 senior Iranian commanders “within a single minute.”
The Israeli military reportedly signaled a shift in strategy, confirming it will now intensify strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities.
