China slams “illegal” US sanctions, vows protection for firms defying Iran oil ban

China on Saturday called on the US to stop abusing sanctions that lack a basis in international law.

The demand follows the Trump administration’s imposition of restrictions on a Chinese oil facility over the importation of Iranian crude.

The spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, Liu Pengyu, stated: “China opposes unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction that have no foundation in international law. Normal economic and trade cooperation between Chinese companies and other nations should not be interfered with or undermined.”

Pengyu urged the US to end the misuse of such measures, emphasizing that Beijing remains committed to firmly protecting the legitimate rights and interests of its enterprises.

Previously on Friday, the US State Department announced sanctions against the Chinese firm Qingdao Haiyi and its president.

American officials explained that the company had imported tens of millions of barrels of sanctioned Iranian crude oil, triggering the restrictive measures.
