Egyptian government announces shift from in-kind to cash subsidies

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on Thursday affirmed that the government is not aiming to reduce the value of subsidies included in the state budget, but instead seeks to ensure they reach eligible groups more efficiently and equitably.

He noted that the government is studying a gradual shift from in-kind to cash subsidies.

During a cabinet meeting, Madbouly explained that the government aims to begin implementing the cash subsidy system in the next fiscal year, after completing the necessary studies and consulting with experts and relevant stakeholders to ensure the best targeting mechanisms for eligible groups.

The Prime Minister added that the most vulnerable segments of the population will receive larger subsidy amounts according to a gradual system which better ensures that resources are directed effectively to those who need them.

Remittances on the rise

Madbouly added that remittances from Egyptians working abroad rose to $34.9 billion between July 2025 and March 2026, compared to approximately $26.4 billion during the same period of the previous year.

He indicated that this increase reflects the confidence of Egyptians abroad in their homeland’s economy and  the economic policies implemented by the state, emphasizing that the Egyptian economy continues to achieve positive indicators despite current regional and international challenges and global conflicts.
