Egyptian churches denounce planned ‘Police Day’ protest

Egypt's Orthodox, Catholic and Anglican churches this week called on Egyptian Christians to refrain from taking part in planned demonstrations slated for Tuesday, 25 January, which will mark national "Police Day."

The demonstrations are reportedly being organized by opposition groups to protest alleged rights violations by Egyptian security services.

“We don't know exactly who's organizing these demonstrations and for what purpose,” said Bishop Morcos, head of the Coptic Holy Synod's media commission. “We shouldn't take part in attempts at sedition.”

The pastor of the Virgin Mary Church in Cairo's Mostorod district, Bishop Abdel Massieh Bassit, meanwhile, called on all Copts both at home and abroad to go to church on the day of the planned protest and pray for God's blessings on Egypt and the Egyptian people.

Anglican Church Undersecretary Andre Zaki and Catholic Bishop Aziz Motran also reportedly denounced the scheduled Police Day demonstrations.
