Protesters said the mounting number of demonstrators joining the manifestation scared the security forces, who feared losing control.
Security officers detained lingering protesters on Qasr al-Aini street and beat some protesters fiercely.
Other security agents stormed homes in the nearby Garden City district in search of fleeing demonstrators.
Police officers threatened passers by telling them they should return home rather than watching the protests.
