The ruling National Democratic Party has complained about accusations–including the hiring of thugs to assault peaceful Tahrir protesters–against some of its members. It asserted that such accusations fail to serve ongoing national dialogue.
The NDP announced on Saturday the dismissal of politburo members, after receiving reports on the involvement of some leaders in hiring the thugs.
Politburo members previously included Safwat al-Sherif, speaker of the Shura Council, Gamal Mubarak, head of NDP policies committee, Ali Eddin Helal, secretary of information, Moufid Shehab, minister of state for parliamentary councils and legal affairs, and Zakareya Azmi, chief of presidential affairs.
Mohamed Abdullah, NDP secretary-general assistant and secretary of information, said the charges leveled against the party are incompatible with values of pluralism, tolerance and acceptance of the other.
“Such rumor-mongers embrace exclusionary thought which is incompatible with the most basic democratic values,” said Abdullah on Tuesday in a statement. He called on NDP members to confront the accusations in a “patient” manner.
