The committee tasked with investigating the shooting of demonstrators during the 25 January revolution will submit its report to Attorney-General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud in a few days, sources said.
The report proves the involvement of several former high-ranking officials in the incidents, Al-Masry Al-Youm has learned, starting with former President Hosni Mubarak, his son Gamal, former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly and other officials of the former ruling National Democratic Party (NDP).
Sources said the committee discovered erstwhile NDP Secretary-General Safwat al-Sherif ordered party secretaries in all branches to send thousands of armed thugs to Tahrir Square to suppress the demonstrations.
Some of the thugs were transported to the square in a van belonging to a state-owned newspaper. They were first taken to a quarry on the outskirts of Cairo to collect marble slivers to strike the demonstrators with.
The committee also recently heard the testimonies of Interior Ministry officials over Gamal Mubarak’s involvement in particular.
Furthermore, the body is deliberating al-Adly’s responsibility, concerning whether he should be tried for a “criminal” role he played in the incident, or for a “political” role in the sense that he was ordered by the former president to end the demonstrations at any cost, even if he had to fire on demonstrators.
