Court rules against canceling constitutional referendum

An Egyptian court rejected on Wednesday 14 lawsuits which call for canceling the constitutional referendum scheduled for Saturday 19 March.

Political groups and parties refused the proposed amendments made to some articles of the Constitution, in force since 1971, and called for writing a new one.

Judicial sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the administrative court presided over by Kamal al-Lamey rejected the lawsuits submitted by activists, reasoning that it’s not the court’s specialization to review such kinds of cases.

Eyewitnesses said dozens of activists protested in front of the court after the ruling was issued and shouted anti-referendum chants.

Around 14 activists, including 2005 presidential runner-up Ayman Nour and others, called on the Supreme Council for the Armed Forces to cancel the referendum.
