Egyptian authorities on Tuesday tightened security around the home of the Israeli ambassador in Cairo following news that some political movements plan to stage a protest in the area.
Egyptian activists had previously announced they plan to stage protests Friday for the 63rd anniversary of the creation of the state of Israel on Palestinian land. Palestinians refer to the day as "Nakba," or "catastrophe" in Arabic.
In a statement, the movements said the Israeli ambassador's home in Maadi will be a point of assembly for the protesters.
Seven central security trucks have been deployed in the neighborhood, and the street leading up to the ambassador’s home has been blocked to traffic, a security source said.
During the past two weeks, Egyptian protesters have staged protests to call for the closure of the Israeli Embassy in Cairo and the cancellation of the peace treaty signed with Israel in 1979.
