Poverty and the rising costs of living were the reasons behind three unrelated suicides Wednesday in three different provinces.
The first case was that of worker Samir el-Sayed, who hanged himself in his room in Daqahlia. "I saw him hanging from the ceiling," said Samir’s 24-year-old wife Amal. "He took his own life after failing to find a job. He could no longer meet daily expenses."
The second case was that of unemployed youngster Said Youssef, who committed suicide in Kafr el-Sheikh by throwing himself out the window of a building. "My husband used to make a maximum of LE400 per month, of which he had to pay LE300 for rent," said his wife. "How could he provide for me and our five children with what was left?"
In Sharqiya, 31-year-old Mohamed Ibrahim also hanged himself after failing to meet the conditions set by his fiancee’s family, who threatened to call off his engagement to their daughter if the young man was unable to provide an apartment for the two after marriage.
