Security sources said Thursday that they had controlled a fire that broke out Wednesday night in one of the grain silos in Beheira Governorate, north Cairo.
The blaze in Wadi Natrun damaged 40 sacks of wheat. Another 2 tons were ruined by water from the firefighters' hoses.
Eyewitnesses said two palm trees that people were burning nearby fell close to the silo, causing sacks of grain to catch fire.
Prime Minister Essam Sharaf had opened the silo Tuesday, one day before the fire broke out.
The government said the grain storehouse was established on 10 acres according to the latest technological methods, at a total cost of LE40 million. It has a capacity to store 30,000 tons of grain annually.
