Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar Ahmed al-Tayeb met on Tuesday with two Shia delegations from Hizbullah and Iran, the latter handing him an invitation from Iranian Shura Council Speaker Ali Larijani to visit Tehran.
At the meeting, Tayeb called for safeguarding the interests of the Islamic nation as a whole, irrespective of religious sectarian differences. He also called for peaceful coexistence among all Muslim sects, and respect for the Prophet Mohamed’s family and companions.
But Tayeb warned against attempts to spread the Shia doctrine in Egypt, saying Al-Azhar would thwart any such attempts.
