Nasr City prosecution on Wednesday began interrogating 16 football fans accused of participating in riots that followed a football match Tuesday.
Fans of Ahly, Egypt's leading football team, clashed with security officers during an Egypt Cup match against KIMA Aswan in Cairo Stadium.
The scuffles left 88 police and four Ahly fans injured and damaged 12 police vehicles, according to the police investigation.
Some press reports said the clashes started when fans chanted slogans against former President Hosni Mubarak and former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly.
But an Interior Ministry statement blamed the clashes on the Ahly fans who, it said, chanted against police.
The ministry statement said the fans blocked the nearby Salah Salem road after exiting the stadium and assaulted police forces and smashed cars.
