Presidential hopeful Mohamed ElBaradei has called upon Egypt's ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) to amend the interim constitution issued in March and reassess its management of the transitional period.
On his Facebook page late Sunday, ElBaradei wrote that getting over the current political impasse will require transparency and determination to fulfill the demands of the 25 January revolution.
ElBaradei attributed much of the country's deteriorating security to the military's mismanagement of the transition, as well as a lack of transprency and political vision.
He urged the SCAF to immediately achieve the revolution's demands, including drawing up a road map for a transition to a civilian-led democratic government, restructuring the nation's security forces, purging state-run media outlets and judicial authorities of figures linked to the Mubarak regime, restoring Egyptians' confidence through transparency, and drafting a short-term economic plan to end the current economic crisis and provide work opportunities for young people.
He added that the transition to a civilian government will require amendments and additions to the interim constitution, which should stipulate who will make up the parliamentary panel that will write the new constitution, or at least achieve a consensus on the panel's guidelines.
A new constitution would be written before parliamentary elections, according to ElBaradei's plan, providing what he feels would be a fair chance for political candidates both inside and outside Egypt; presidential elections would then be held in the framework of the new political system.
